I was particularly honored to be invited to be part of the Lille Piano(s) Festival, and to inaugurate their new “campus” at the Abbeye de Vaucelles. As part of their marathon day of listening to amazing pianists, I asked them to listen to themselves and vote on their preferences between Debussy and Prokofiev! The exercise was well-received, with the winning vote going to Debussy - influenced perhaps by the meditative setting, or perhaps the 100th anniversary of the death of Debussy, or simply French pride? The only differing factor was age - with under 40’s preferring Prokofiev. But not enough of them to sway the overall vote. See below for more!
